Fifty Ways to Groove

50WaysSteve Gadd’s groove on Paul Simon’s “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” has stood the test of time and earned the status of legendary drum part. Here’s a transcription of Gadd performing this fantastic linear groove; stickings are based on Steve’s own performance. Notice that the left hand plays the Hi-Hat and that there’s a three-note grouping between the Hi-Hat foot, Hi-Hat and. Percussion includes a Tambourine playing upbeats in the verses; downbeats in the chorus. The performance tempo is 100 bpm. This is a perfect example of “less is more.”
